Our Coffee
our philosophy
Delight over Dogma
We got into coffee because it's endlessly personal. No two people taste the same thing, and every person who walks through our door brings a different palate, a different relationship with what feels right chasing that difference, finding the cup that's genuinely theirs, is the most interesting problem we know. That curiosity is the reason we built Desert Kid the way we did.
What Makes Coffee "Specialty"?
Not all coffee is created equal. While 80% of the world's coffee is considered "commodity grade" – anonymous beans from unknown farms, mixed together and sold based purely on price – specialty coffee represents the top 20%. These are beans with a story, grown by farmers who care as much about quality as we do.
Grown commercially where volume drives every decision
Independent farmers who treat every harvest as a craft
Harvested by machine, ripe and unripe cherries combined
Hand-picked at perfect ripeness
Sold as a generic product
Traceable to the farmer who grew them
Focus on quantity over quality
Scored 80+ points by coffee professionals
From Farm To Your Cup
At the Farm
Our beans begin their journey at carefully selected farms, often at high elevations where cooler temperatures slow the cherry's development, creating more complex sugars and deeper flavors. Farmers hand-pick only the ripest cherries – a labor-intensive process that can take multiple passes through the same trees.
Processing with Purpose
After harvest, each batch is processed using methods that highlight the bean's natural characteristics. Whether it's the clean, bright flavors of washed processing or the fruity, wine-like notes from natural processing, every decision impacts what you'll taste in your cup.
Roasting as Craft
In our roastery, we treat each origin like a unique ingredient. Our roast profiles are developed specifically for each coffee's characteristics – some beans shine with a lighter roast that preserves their floral notes, while others develop rich chocolate undertones with a slightly darker approach.
FAIR COMPENSATION
We pay farmers 2-3 times the commodity price, ensuring they can invest in quality and sustain their operations.
METICULOUS PROCESSING
Hand-picking, careful processing, and small-batch roasting require time, skill, and attention that mass production can't match.
FRESHNESS
We roast in small batches and ship within days of roasting. Commodity coffee might sit in warehouses for months.
TRACEABILITY
Every bean is traceable to its origin, allowing us to build relationships with farmers and ensure quality at every step.
What This Means for Your Experience
That's what drives every decision from the farm to the roastery. Not perfection for its own sake – just the relentless pursuit of the cup that's exactly right for you. The farmers we work with, the roast profiles we develop, the care we put into every batch — it all points in the same direction. Your cup.
